Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility (IRF) Documentation
The Medicare IRF benefit provides comprehensive, intensive rehabilitation therapy in a specialized inpatient hospital setting, including rehab hospitals and dedicated units. The IRF benefit supports patients who require an inpatient stay and an interdisciplinary care team approach. Facilities have a reasonable expectation that patients will gain from the complexity of service provided, including skilled nursing, medical management, and advanced rehabilitation therapies.
Consult the Noridian IRF and Medical Review webpages for details on required physician orders, preadmission screening, and other necessary documentation. For guidance on submitting services for reimbursement, refer to the billing guide.
