Original Effective Date: 01/01/2000
Revision Effective Date: 11/01/2013

A new code has been established to bill for all oxygen concentrators.

  • E1390 - Oxygen concentrator, capable of delivering 85 percent or greater oxygen concentration at the prescribed flow rate

This code is effective for claims with dates of service on or after January 1, 2000. It will be in the Oxygen payment category.

Oxygen concentrators differ in the maximum oxygen flow rate that they can deliver having an oxygen concentration of 85 percent or greater. Code E1390 may only be billed if the concentrator provided to the patient can deliver an oxygen concentration of 85 percent or greater at the maximum liter flow rate ordered for the patient.

Code E1390 will replace codes E1400-E1404 that are currently used to bill for oxygen concentrators. For patients currently using concentrators billed with these codes, a revised CMN will not be required when submitting claims for code E1390.

A grace period exists for making the coding transition:

  • Codes E1400-E1404 will continue to be required for all claims with dates of service on or before December 31, 1999.
  • Codes E1400-E1404 will be accepted if both (1) the date of service is on or after January 1, 2000 and (2) the claim is received on or before March 31, 2000.
  • Codes E1400-E1404 will be rejected as invalid if both (1) the date of service is on or after January 1, 2000 and (2) the claim is received on or after April 1, 2000.
