April is Alcohol Awareness Month

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are now using alcohol to manage stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation. The restrictions put in place to protect us are also preventing people from attending counseling and other programs built to help those who struggle with alcoholism.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), excessive alcohol use has immediate and long-term health risks, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, weakened immune system, alcohol poisoning, injuries, and miscarriages.

Medicare covers an alcohol misuse screening once per year for adults who use alcohol, but don’t meet the medical criteria for alcohol dependency.

Please check out these Medicare resources to help beneficiaries with alcohol misuse.
