Modifier EX

DMEPOS provided to Medicare beneficiaries living outside of the U.S. and delivered while the beneficiary was in the U.S. and delivered to a U.S. address. EX was developed to allow suppliers to bill Medicare for purchased only DMEPOS items that are furnished to expatriate beneficiaries.

Correct Use

  • Suppliers must submit expatriate claims with the EX modifier on all claim lines
    • Suppliers shall submit claims for processing to the appropriate DME MAC based on supplier locality
  • Purchased DMEPOS with date of service on/after July 1, 2016

Excluded Items/Services

  • Oxygen Equipment and Supplies
  • Parenteral/Enteral Nutrition Equipment and Supplies
  • Rentals - Capped or Inexpensive, Routinely Purchased (IRP)
