Modifier KT

Suppliers must affix the KT modifier to claims for competitively bid items that are furnished to beneficiaries whose permanent residence is in a Competitive Bid Area (CBA) and need a competitively bid item when they have traveled outside of the CBA where they reside.

Note: Permanent residence is the address on file with the Social Security Administration (SSA). It is the address to which the SSA mails checks and/or correspondence to the beneficiary.

Correct Use

  • Append if a beneficiary who lives in a CBA travels to an area that is not a CBA and obtains an item included in competitive bidding program, non-contract supplier must affix this modifier to claim
  • Append if a beneficiary who lives in a CBA travels to a different CBA and obtains an item included in competitive bidding program from a contract supplier for that CBA
