Joint DME MAC Publication
Posted November 7, 2024

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) assigned to the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractors (DME MACs) the task of developing local coverage determinations (LCDs) for processing and reviewing Medicare claims for Durable Medical Equipment, Prostheses, Orthoses, and Supplies (DMEPOS). The DME MACs have received requests from Inotec AMD Inc. and ALSTON & BIRD Law Firm (representing a group of wound care specialists) to revise the Oxygen and Oxygen Equipment LCD to include language indicating that Topical Oxygen is reasonable and necessary for wound healing therapy. The purpose of this Specialty Focused CAC is to discuss the scientific evidence underlying the requested LCD revisions.

The Contractor Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting will take place on December 11, 2024. This meeting will be conducted virtually. The CAC meeting will begin at 12: 00 PM and is scheduled to end at 2 PM (all times CT). Interested stakeholders are invited to attend; however, registration is required. Registration is available at Topical Oxygen Therapy Contractor Advisory Committee Meeting. Once registered you will receive login information via email prior to the meeting. Lines will remain muted throughout the conference except for the invited CAC members and the DME MAC hosts. Registration should be received no later than Tuesday, December 10, 2024.

CAC members will be asked to discuss the clinical literature related to the LCD reconsideration request and to score a series of Key Questions. Discussions will occur between CAC members. The public may attend; however, presentations or questions to CAC members from the public will not be permitted. Once a proposed LCD is posted, a 45-day comment period will commence, affording stakeholders a chance to submit written comments, along with an Open Meeting to afford a chance to provide any additional verbal comments.
