Modifier LT
Left side (Used to identify item provided for the left side of the body)
This modifier is used to identify procedures performed on left side of body. Be sure to determine if HCPCS modifier LT is applicable for a particular procedure code. It does not affect allowed amount on a claim; however, lack of a required modifier can cause denials or development to occur.
Correct Use
- Append to appropriate code when body contains a right and left anatomical part of body and a service is performed on left anatomical part
- Bilateral - when using both RT and LT modifiers, bill on two separate claim lines and one unit of service on each line
Incorrect Use
- When procedure code description specifies bi-lateral or a side of body
