LCD Title: Peripheral Nerve Injections and Procedures for Chronic Pain

Summary of LCD: This LCD outlines limited coverage for this service and was developed to update existing policy to evidence based and incorporate new procedures and literature. Peripheral nerve injections (PNIs) consist of injections of local anesthetics (LA), with or without adjuvant steroids, into the perineural region of peripheral nerves or nerve ganglia. PNIs when used for chronic pain, are for the treatment and management of localized pain syndromes. PNIs provide targeted diagnostic or therapeutic benefits that generate temporary to long-term analgesic relief of chronic neuropathic pain or focal chronic nociceptive pain. Peripheral nerve denervation is the mechanical loss or interruption of nerve supply to muscle, organ or tissue, and can be used therapeutically to destroy nerves as a modality to treat chronic pain.
