Do you know if your facility, practice or billing service is utilizing the Noridian Medicare Portal (NMP) to view the Eligibility section of your patient’s payer type/value code when billing Medicare as a secondary payer? For example, billing Disability (43) when actual MSP/Payer type was Liability (47).

Denial messages related to incorrect payer type or value codes includes the following:

• Secondary payment cannot be made, because primary insurer information is missing or incomplete.

• RARC code: MA04 (Secondary payment cannot be considered without the identity of or payment information from the primary payer.)

• CARC code: CO-16 (Claim/service lacks information or has submission/billing error{s}.)

Solution:

• Fix these errors quickly through the NMP, under Reopenings, and listen to the Education on Demand recording found under MSP Payer type Reopening through the portal.

• Noridian encourages providers to utilize the Noridian Medicare Portal (NMP).
