Prior Authorization for Repetitive, Scheduled Non-Emergent Ambulance Transport (RSNAT)
The Federal Register established a prior authorization (PA) process for Repetitive, Scheduled Non-Emergent Ambulance Transport (RSNAT). Effective for dates of service August 01, 2022, and after, providers may request prior authorization for the following ambulance services: ambulance service, advanced life support, nonemergency transport level 1 (ALS 1); and ambulance service, basic life support, nonemergency transport (BLS).
The ambulance supplier will submit the PA to their Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) jurisdiction. The term requestor will be used throughout this page to describe the person or entity that submits the prior authorization request (PAR), documentation, and/or claims. The MAC will review information submitted and issue the decision (affirmative or non-affirmative) to the provider. The MAC may affirm up to 40 round trips (80 one-way trips) per prior authorization request in a 60-day period.
The provider may resubmit a PAR with additional supporting information, upon receipt of a non-affirmation, as many times as necessary to achieve an affirmation decision. The PAR coversheet can be found on our Forms page.
