Ambulance Personnel
BLS Personnel
The ambulance must be staffed by two people who meet the requirements of state and local laws where the services are being furnished and where:
- At least one of whom is qualified in accordance with State and local laws as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-Basic) and be legally authorized to operate all lifesaving and life-sustaining equipment on board the vehicle. It is this qualified personnel (EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate or EMT-P) who must attend the patient throughout the transport.
In addition to the above mentioned basic Medicare requirements, an ambulance provider/supplier who wants to enroll in Medicare must meet all state and local staffing requirements and will be verified during the on site initial, revalidation and other provider enrollment inspections. Failure to meet requirements will result in a denied application or termination of billing privileges.

- At least one of whom must meet the vehicle staff requirements above for BLS vehicles and whom is qualified in accordance with State and local laws as an EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) and be legally authorized to operate all lifesaving and life-sustaining equipment on board the vehicle. It is this qualified personnel (EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate or EMT-P) who must attend the patient throughout the transport.
